How to Detangle Curly, Wavy & Coily Hair

alt=”detangling curly hair”

Wavy, curly, and coily hair has a unique and beautiful texture, but detangling it can be another story. Knots and tangles can seem like constant companions, causing frustration and breakage, here is why:

Friction: Curly patterns easily snag on each other, especially during shampooing, conditioning, and drying.

Dryness: Curly patterns tend to be drier, making them more brittle and prone to breakage while detangling.

Product Buildup: If you're not using sulfates, your hair is prone to product build-up creating sticky clumps and tangles. Remember to clarify your hair with a clarifying shampoo (sulfate-free) when needed.

We recommend the following steps for gentle and easy detangling of your wavy, curly, and coily hair:

1 Wet Your Hair

When your hair is wet, it becomes softer and more elastic with a natural slip helping you glide through the knots. However, your hair is more fragile when wet so be gentle and never skip the next step!

2 Condition Your Hair

Add a conditioner, masque, or leave-in conditioner to create even more slip.

3 Detangling Tool

The best tool to detangle with is your fingers as you can feel when your hair is about to snap. Otherwise, you can use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush with flexible bristles.

4 Work From The Bottom Up

Divide your hair into sections and gently detangle each section from the ends and up. We recommend starting with your fingers or the wide-tooth comb to detangle any stubborn knots, then gliding over with a detangling brush afterward.

5 Detangling Between Washes

If your hair gets tangled between washes, apply an oil and gently work your way through the knots with your fingers.
