Ultimate Hair Repair with Deep Conditioning

Deep conditioning is without a doubt, the ultimate way to repair, restore, strengthen, and moisturize your hair. Knowing your hair porosity will help you get the best result from the treatment.

Before You Start

Choose a hair masque suitable for your hair's needs. If you have dry or damaged hair, find a hair masque with proteins beneficial for your hair porosity:

Low Porosity: Look for smaller proteins like amino acids, silk protein, or keratin as these are small enough to enter your tight cuticles.
Medium Porosity: Look for small-medium proteins like keratin, wheat, or oats.
High Porosity: Look for medium-larger proteins like wheat, oats, soy, and quinoa as these will essentially fill the gaps between the hair cuticles and strengthen the hair.

Be careful not to get protein overload! Read more in our article How To Balancing Moisture And Protein.

1 Cleanse

Hop into the shower and clean your hair as usual with a cleanser of your choice. If you have low porosity hair, rinse your hair with warm water to lift the hair cuticles preparing them for penetration. If you have medium-high porosity, rinse with medium temperature water to ensure your hair cuticles are ready for penetration.

2 Apply Hair Masque

Apply the hair masque focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. If you have very dry hair, you can also apply a small amount to the roots. Avoid applying too close to the scalp if your hair is prone to oiliness.

3 Leave On

Leave on the treatment, giving it time to penetrate your hair. Get the optimal result by following your hair porosity’s needs:

Low Porosity

Wrap your hair in a shower cap and towel on top to trap the steam and create a warm environment. For an extra boost, use a heat cap instead of a towel. The warm environment will help open the hair cuticles and allow the hair masque to penetrate deeper. Leave the hair masque on for 20-30 minutes.

Medium Porosity

Wrap your hair in a shower cap and towel on top to trap the steam and create a warm environment. The warm environment will help open the hair cuticles and allow the hair masque to penetrate deeper. Leave the hair masque on for 15 minutes.

High Porosity

Opt to wrap your hair in a shower cap for gentle natural warmth. Leave the hair masque on for 5-10 minutes to allow the masque to deeply penetrate your hair.

4 Rinse

If you have medium-high porosity, rinse thoroughly with cold water to close the cuticles and trap the moisture (+protein) you just added. For low porosity hair, rinsing with medium temperature water is just fine.

How Often Should I Deep Condition?

Your hair porosity will give you an indication of how often you would need to deep condition.

Low Porosity: 1-2 times a month.
Medium Porosity: 2 times a month.
High Porosity: Weekly.

Other factors can influence the needed frequency such as hair coloring, extensive heat styling, and sun exposure. You should always deep condition with protein after a chemical treatment (hair coloring, bleaching, permanent curls, or hair straightening) to rebuild the hair.
